Ivan Milat’s letter to his girlfriend, Chalinder Hughes, from Long Bay Jail. The spelling mistakes are his.
My dear Chalinda
Hello my love, I am well and hope you are…It has been a long time for us and you have been with me all the way, which I am so glad. I am torn between my heart and mind what I should say to you.
I only want you to live a happy life, I love you so much that I would do anything to make you happy. Me not writing to you I suppose would not achieve that, that hasn’t been the reason, I only wanted to give you a bit of space…I love your letter’s but you like I must find it difficult as I do lose touch of what goes on out there and I can’t write to much of what goes on here, it is two different world’s.
Mine here is mine, and is so far removed from your’s that after a while one can’t even compare them, so which leave’s me very little room to write a decent letter to you…
I love you and appreciate your commitment to me, you have had mine from the start, except I was slow — afraid to show a lot, but always thought as time goes on one will one day get it right.
Anyhow my love, things are on the move we are preparing for the battle which is still very one sided as you are aware. But which I do expect to win, even though they are determined that I must fail…
Anyway my love, have faith I have Till next time, love you.
