On the first day of his cross-examination, June 17, 1996, Ivan was being asked about items found in his car. At the end of the day, after a very long cross examination, just before 4 o’clock, just before the court is about to rise, the prosecutor, Mark Tedeschi asked Ivan a question about a rubber glove also found in his car, “And I ask you did you wear it by any chance in the crimes in the Belanglo State Forest in order to prevent fingerprints being left?”.
Ivan blew it, “I wore no …” he stopped himself. You could hear a pin drop in the courtroom.
Tedeschi: “You wore no what?”
Milat: “Well, I never wore that glove. I never seen it before.”
Tedeschi: “You were about to say ‘I wore no’ and then you stopped.”
Milat: “I was going to say I wore no gloves at all.”
Tedeschi: “You wore no gloves at all in the forest, is that what you were going to say?”
Milat: “No, in the car.”
The court adjourned for the day on this note…
